Turkish work permits for foreigners are available through domestic and overseas application routes. For a standard employer-sponsored application from inside Türkiye, you generally need a Turkish residence permit issued for at least six months that remains valid when you apply. Your employer submits the application through e-İzin. Certain applicants qualify for exceptions.Ministry guidance.

Applying from inside Türkiye: who is eligible?
A qualifying residence permit can allow your employer to submit a domestic application. The six-month rule concerns the duration for which the residence permit was issued; it should not be read as a universal requirement to have already lived in Türkiye for six months.
Your residence permission must still be valid on the application date. Check its type, dates and any applicable special rules before proceeding. The Ministry also recognises certain categories of legally present foreigners who may apply without a valid residence permit. Ministry guidance.
Converting a residence permit to a work permit: is it automatic?
No. A residence permit and a work permit serve different purposes. Having residence permission can establish eligibility for the domestic application route, but a separate work-permit application and approval are required.
A work permit generally also provides residence permission during its validity. Special rules apply to international protection applicants, conditional refugees and people under temporary protection. Ministry guidance.
How to submit a work permit application in Türkiye or from abroad
For an employer-sponsored domestic application:
- Confirm that your residence status permits an application from Türkiye.
- Agree the position and employment terms with your employer.
- Prepare the applicant and employer documents.
- Have your employer complete the application through e-İzin.
For an overseas application, begin at the Turkish embassy or consulate in your country of citizenship or lawful residence. You receive a 16-digit reference number, which your employer uses for the e-İzin application.

What must your employer qualify for?
Employer sponsorship involves more than offering a job. The Ministry assesses the employer and proposed employment against the applicable criteria, including employment levels, financial eligibility and salary.
Requirements vary by sector, role and applicant circumstances. For example, specified technology roles have exceptions to employment and financial criteria. The current rules also contain an exception for certain domestic applicants with qualifying recent legal residence history, subject to limits and conditions.
Your employer should check the current criteria before preparing the application. Applying a single staffing or capital rule to every business can produce the wrong conclusion. Work permit evaluation criteria.
Which documents should you prepare?
For a typical employer-sponsored application, prepare the following and check which additional documents your role requires:

A passport translation is required where the passport is not written in Latin characters. Diploma requirements depend on the profession; the Ministry’s guidance does not make a diploma compulsory for domestic care work.
Passport validity also affects the application and permit duration. Applications using a passport with less than 60 days’ validity are not processed, and an issued permit cannot extend beyond the date 60 days before passport expiry.

How can a foreign company owner obtain a work permit?
Company ownership does not automatically authorise you to work in Türkiye. The Ministry distinguishes working company partners and directors from certain non-resident board members and non-managing partners covered by exemption provisions. An independent work permit is another category, allowing approved applicants to work on their own behalf. It is assessed against factors such as qualifications, professional experience and the economic or employment contribution of the proposed activity. Registering a company does not guarantee this permit.
For a standard fixed-term work permit, an initial approval can be granted for up to one year, subject to the employment contract and other applicable conditions. Work permit types.
How long does assessment take?
The Ministry states that duly completed applications are assessed within 30 days when the required information and documents are complete. If additional material is requested, the period starts from its submission through the system.
This is not a promise that the entire process—from preparing documents to completing consular steps—will take 30 days. Allow time for preparation and any additional requests. Ministry work permit FAQs.
When should you renew your work permit?
Apply to renew your Turkish work permit electronically through e-İzin during the 60 days before it expires, and submit the application before the expiry date. Applications submitted after expiry are assessed under the rules for an initial application. If approved, the first extension may cover up to two years and subsequent extensions up to three years with the same employer. - Confirm the correct domestic or overseas route.
- Check passport and residence-permit dates.
- Confirm that the employer meets the relevant criteria.
- Make sure the contract, job description and supporting documents agree.
- Resolve missing documents before submission.
- Record the permit expiry date and renewal window.
